Meet Our Staff

Joe Bull

VICE PRESIDENT/CHIEF ADVANCEMENT & ALUMNI OFFICER

With 37 years of experience in the philanthropic arena, Joe Bull is known as an effective leader of highly performing advancement teams and for his technical expertise as a charitable gift planner.

He is a nationally recognized speaker and author on issues related to charitable gift planning, principal gifts, and philanthropy. His comments have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Forbes, and The Chronicles of Philanthropy and Higher Education.

Previously, Joe served as assistant vice president of development and executive director of gift planning at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to that appointment, he was senior vice president for community engagement at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Earlier in his career, he served 16 years as director of planned giving at The Ohio State University, was senior philanthropy officer for Global Priorities at the Worldwide Office of The Nature Conservancy and held leadership roles in planned gift development at Duke and North Carolina State Universities.

Service to his profession is important to him. Joe is currently the president of the American Council on Gift Annuities and was the 2005 board chair of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners. As such, he is only the second person ever to have held the top leadership position at both of charitable gift planning’s professional organizations. In addition, he was a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the national monthly newsletter Planned Giving Today for 15 years, a member of the Editorial Board of the web-based Planned Giving Design Center, and a faculty member of the College of William and Mary’s National Planned Giving Institute.

He received a BS in business administration, summa cum laude, from The Ohio State University. Joe also earned both an MA and a JD from Ohio State and is admitted to the Ohio and North Carolina bars.

 


 

Tammy Shadley-Hutton

SENIOR DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT OPERATIONS

Tammy Shadley-Hutton received her undergraduate degree in education from Wilmington College in 1990 and received her MS degree in 2005 from the University of Cincinnati. Tammy has been an administrator at Wilmington College since 1997, working in the areas of Institutional Technology, Academic Affairs, and Advancement. Current job responsibilities include overseeing the gift recording and acknowledgement area, helping manage the moves management process, development research, data management, and reporting. She is also an adjunct instructor of Criminal Justice, serves on staff council, and is faculty advisor of Delta Theta Sigma Lil Sis Sorority.

Tammy’s off-campus community activities involve being coordinator of Leadership Clinton Youth Collaborative and co-president of Wilmington High School Athletic Boosters.

Currently, Tammy resides in Wilmington with her husband Tim and son Colt.

 


 

Steve Spirk

ASSOC. DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

After 30 years as the women’s soccer coach (retired) Steve Spirk serves the Wilmington College Office of Advancement as its associate director of development.

 

 

 


 

Sarah Holtsclaw

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ANNUAL GIVING

Sarah Holtsclaw is a 2018 graduate of Wilmington College where she earned a BS in political science and agricultural change for environmental sustainability. As a student Sarah was an active member of Kappa Delta Sorority, a member of the swim team, and director of the Activities Programming Board. She also worked in the Advancement Office as a Phonathon caller and founding member of the Student Philanthropy Council. Sarah was the 2018 recipient of the Robert E. Lucas Leadership Award.

Sarah began her career in Washington D.C., empowering constituents to lobby elected officials for social justice at the Friends Committee on National Legislation. She then returned to Ohio serving in a fundraising role at Camp Joy in Clarksville. She brings a passion for philanthropic storytelling and relationship building to the advancement team.

 


 

COORDINATOR OF ADVANCEMENT SERVICES

Alec Hargrove is an undergraduate alumna from Wilmington College class of 2010. She also earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from Indiana Wesleyan University. She has worked in administration and accounting for the last six years and brings that with her to the advancement department. Her prior experience with nonprofit organizations comes from working in administration for Talbert House, a nonprofit organization providing support for mental health and addiction services for four years.
